GEM 5.0
Some 3 years ago GMB developed an innovative email management product that
was rules driven and totally 'behind-the-scenes' automatic in operation. It was
called GEM, "GMB's Email Manager". At the time we
used the RecFind Corporate version 3.2 16 bit engine as the base product and
wrote a new 'thin-client' called GEM TC, duplicating most of the functionality
of RecQuery TC. The marketing decision was to make GEM and RecFind separate
products.
Innovative as GEM was, it was a first effort and we soon realized that we
needed to do a much better job, hence we began a complete redesign that is now
culminating in GEM 5.0. GEM 5.0 is a completely new product that shares no DNA
whatsoever with GEM 3.2. Unlike GEM 3.2 it is based on the very latest 32 bit
technology and was designed from the outset to be 100% compatible with RecFind
5.0. And yes, all GEM 3.2 customers will be offered GEM 5.0 upgrades at no cost.
GEM 5.0 is better in all ways than GEM 3.2. It is faster, smarter, infinitely
easier to install and manage and has significant additional functionality
including a configurable, tunable SPAM filter to eradicate all those nasty emails
that are driving us all crazy.
GEM 5.0 will be offered as a complete new system or as an add-on to RecFind
Corporate 5.0. The second release will include a 'Gateway' that allows it to be
a 'plug-in' for any other records or document management system (meaning that it
does not require RecFind Corporate.
The release of GEM 5.0 is still about two months away so we will resist
telling you too much more until nearer to release time.

RecFind 5 for SQL is now shipping. All customers using the SQL
version of RecFind should receive their copies by mid July at the very
latest. The Oracle version of RecFind 5 is still in final testing and
certification and will be completed late July and begin shipping early
August.
This is the most significant release we have ever offered. RecFind
5.0 includes many new features and most modules have been heavily
modified or extended.
Those customers under a current Automatic Software Upgrade (ASU)
agreement with GMB will receive this new release automatically. This is
your ASU investment at work! Customers not under warranty or without a
current ASU agreement should contact this office for details on how they
can upgrade to RecFind 5.0.

The first release of the RecQuery TC API (RQTC API) is now available.
With the demise of the OLE engine (there just weren't that many products,
other than RecFind, that were OLE compliant so we were fighting a losing battle)
we began the design of a new way for RecFind to integrate to other applications.
In order to meet the expectations of prospects and customers we also designed
this new product to be object-oriented (avoiding the hassles of traditional
APIs) and a 'Thin-client' product based on RecQuery TC, GMB's document portal.
This first release of the RQTC API supports the 'exposing' of RecFind objects
via HTTP calls to RecQuery TC. It allows you to programmatically call up any
file folder profile, document profile (and attachments) and display them in
RecQuery TC within a browser. It is a way to easily and quickly 'RecFind-enable'
any other product.
In simple terms, the RQTC API provides the ability for customers utilizing RecFind to
create a link from an existing application to information that is stored within
the RecFind data repository. This is achieved by using RecQuery TC and calling a
web site address with special parameters.
The RQTC API is now our main integration engine and we shall
continue to add functionality throughout the next 9 to 12 months until
it is possible to manage all RecFind functions (both reading and writing
records) via this methodology.

Professional Services Update
Written by Gregory Warrilow, GMB Trainer/Consultant
Several highlights stick in my mind so far this month. The first
being the introduction of the RecFind 5 Upgrade Training Course.
Adelaide was the testing ground and the first course was well received. As there are so many new features in RecFind 5 the upgrade
course has been structured over two days. It was great to get positive
feedback after putting so much hard work into the course design.
Many thanks to all the enthusiastic students who attended the first
course in Adelaide.
The other highlight of the month has been spending a week on site at
the Primary Health Care Center in Cunnamulla. Cunnamulla, is
a town of 1,600 inhabitants and is situated on the edge of the
Queensland outback. The Primary Health Care Center is a partnership
between Cunnamulla's Aboriginal Corporation for Health and Queensland
Health, with a staff of around 20 people. The implementation focused
on file tracking and Electronic Document Management (EDM) but it became
obvious that RecFind could be used in a range of other areas, so
databases were created for Personnel records and Library Resources.
Thank you to the staff at the Cunnamulla Primary Health Care Center who
made me feel welcome and kept me on my toes for the week.
Until next month...
